Edcouch woman turns 108-years-old on Independence Day

As we celebrate our nation's birthday, there's a family in Edcouch also celebrating their loved ones 108th birthday.

Refugia Cardona was born in 1906.

She has 8 kids, 45 grandkids and 132 great, great grandkids.

Many of them flew in from all over the country and across the border to be at her birthday party in Edcouch.

Elvira Hernandez shares why this day is so special for her great grandma.

"I think it's a very special day for her to be with her grandkids, great grandkids and great, great grandkids... up to the 5th generation!" she said.

Refugia credits her long life to eating homemade tortillas and Atole.

Both are her favorite foods.

Refugia is originally from Linares Nuevo Leon, Mexico.

She moved to Edcouch in the 1960 TMs.
