An Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District police officer has been suspended without pay, according to an anonymous source at the district.

The swift action against Leal stemmed from his weekend arrest in Palmview on a cocaine possession drug charge.

Leal is a truancy officer for the school district.

If convicted in the Palmview case, Leal could lose his state-issued peace officer's license.

Action 4 News obtained records from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) regarding his employment history.

TCLEOSE records show that Leal started as a licensed peace officer back in July 2002.

Leal worked at the Elsa Police Department and Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office before starting at the Edinburg CISD Police Department in December 2007.

TCLEOSE records show that Leal has no disciplinary actions against his peace officer's license.

An agency spokeswoman said his arrest has not officially been reported to TCLEOSE but Leal, the Edinburg CISD Police Department and the Palmview Police Department must all report the arrest to TCLEOSE within 30 days.

The spokeswoman said a TCLEOSE Investigator would be notified about Leal's arrest.
