Edinburg stepfather arrested for punching toddler to death

An Edinburg stepfather is behind bars after he allegedly punched a 16-month-old baby to death.

Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested 20-year-old Jose L. Garcia on a capital murder charge over the weekend.

Investigators told Action 4 News it all happened at a home off Mile 17 North and Terry Lane around 5 a.m. Saturday.

Garcia told deputies that he and his stepson 16-month-old Jorge Damian were sleeping in the same bed.

The 20-year-old common-law stepfather claimed he woke up to find Jorge not breathing with vomit coming out of his mouth and nose.

The boy was taken to the Edinburg Children TMs Medical Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The toddler's body had bruises and bite marks.

An autospy revealed the boy died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Garcia allegedly admitted to repeatedly punching the boy in the head.

The 20-year-old man faced a judge on Monday morning where he was issued a $500,000 dollar bond.
