Edinburg woman killed in drunk driving wreck, driver in custody

Edinburg Police are investigating a fatal drunk driving accident from early Saturday morning.

Lt. Oscar Trevio said the wreck happened at about 3:30 a.m. on the intersection of Jackson Road and Schunior Avenue.

According to police reports, a 24-year-old woman from Edinburg was intoxicated and driving a red Chevy Cobalt.

She allegedly rammed her car into a blue EOS Volkswagen that had stopped at a red light at the intersection.

Police said the impact seriously injured the 27-year-old driver or the Volkswagen, and killed the 31-year-old woman traveling with him.

Emergency crews transported the drivers of both cars to the hospital.

The 27-year-old man driving the Volkswagen continues recovering from serious injuries but is expected to recover.

Meanwhile, police say the intoxicated woman driving the Chevy Cobalt sustained only minor injuries.

She continues hospitalized as well, but will be taken into custody as soon as she is released.

Lt. Trevio said the 24-year-old woman will likely face intoxicated manslaughter charges.

She is expected to be released sometime Saturday, and face a judge as early as Sunday.

At this time, police have not released the identity of the victim, as they attempt to contact the family.
