Educating the Valley about Down syndrome

Bringing awareness, building relationships, and offering support for individuals with Down syndrome is the mission of the Rio Grande Valley Down Syndrome Association.
Tuesday morning President Deborah Tomai and volunteers Nicole Perez and Rosemary Orozco stopped by to explain.
Tomai said that Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal abnormality, occurring in about one of 691 live births.
She told us that although researchers have not determined the cause of Down syndrome, they know that the most common form of Down syndrome results in an extra 21st chromosome, with a person having three copies of chromosome 21 instead of two.
This form of Down syndrome is also referred to by the name Trisomy 21.
