Elderly Southmost man arrested in molestation case

Maximo Barraza

An 81-year-old Southmost man is behind bars after he allegedly molested a 9-year-old girl visiting his home claiming that the "devil made him do it."

Brownsville police arrested Maximo Barraza on indecency with a child by contact charges on Monday night.

Investigators told Action 4 News that the elderly Southmost man fondled the girl on her chest area.

The girl told authorities that she was visiting family acquaintance at a home on the 1800 block of Wilson Street.

Police said the 9-year-old girl was playing in the backyard of the Southmost home when Barraza allegedly approached her from behind and fondled her.

Barazza allegedly told investigators that the "devil made him do it."

The elderly man appeared before a Brownsville municipal judge on Tuesday morning where he was issued a $15,000 dollar bond.

Court records show that Barraza lives at the home where the incident occurred and did not appear to have a prior criminal record.
