Elderly woman helped after tire blow out thanks 'angel'
Gloria Barrera tracked down the man who she calls an angel sent by God.
"My husband and I were scared," she explained. "We didn't know what to do or where to go or who to turn too."
With her vehicle disabled from a tire blow out off Expressway 77 Frontage Road in San Benito, it's 81-year-old Abel Garcia who came to her rescue.
"I want everyone to know that there are good people out there," Gloria said. Abel thinks she baked him a cake as a way to say thanks.
He has no idea that Action 4 news and FNB Insurance came with her to his home as part of the Pay it 4Ward surprise.
"Mr. Garcia, I want to thank you so much for what you did," Gloria said. "You went out of your way. We were lost and didn't know what to do when my husband and I were out there with a blow out with the tire. But you came over. You gave your time for us and it's something that not too many people do in the Valley. I want the whole Valley to know how special you are."
Abel not only drove Gloria to a tire shop in San Benito, he also paid for the tire to be replaced on her vehicle.
"You refused for me to pay for the tire," she told him. "You said you were going to do it."
Gloria says it's something she'll never forget.
"On behalf of FNB Insurance and Action 4 News, I want to Pay it 4Ward," she told him. "Put your hand out."
But when Gloria tried to hand over the $400 Pay it 4Ward prize, Abel refused to take the money from her.
"No," he said. "I can't accept it. I only paid for the tire cause you needed it."
With a little convincing from Action 4's Ryan Wolf, Abel put out his hand and Gloria finally placed the cash into it.
"I don't know what to say only that I helped you willingly and most of the time when somebody needs help or has any problem here where I live, I go out and help them out," he explained.
The Korean War veteran says it's in his heart to do good.
Bill Jones with FNB Insurance Agency shares why Abel is a deserving recipient of the Pay it 4Ward prize which is sponsored by the company.
"We sure are proud to Pay it 4Ward," he said. "This is a great example of an act of kindness. And it's not the first time that Mr. Garcia has done it. Even the guy that owns the tire shop mentioned that that's the kind of guy Mr. Garcia is."
Abel believes it's our duty as human beings to help someone in need.
He TMs a man who spares no kindness.
"Pay it 4Ward," he said. Thanks for everything!
Abel says he plans to use his prize money to continue to do good for people who need it.
