In light of National Police Week, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday morning commemorated six of its deputies whose lives were taken in the line of duty.

Those in attendance included the families of the fallen deputies, like Hortencia Segovia, who lost her son Manuel Segovia on the night of Halloween in 1986.

A night that his wife, Celia Segovia, will never forget.

"They told me that something happened to Manuel,” recalled Celia. “I didn't want to believe it was true and I kept trying to look around them to see if he was there."

Although Manuel’s life was cut short, his mother and wife continue to celebrate the legacy he left behind and acknowledge the sacrifices he made to protect the community.

So every year, Hortencia and Celia stand alongside men and women in brown, blue and grey uniforms to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

“It’s important to know that if something happens to them, they will never be forgotten,” Celia said.
