Fri, 27 Dec 2013 04:26:38 GMT — An afternoon accident claimed the life of a 21-year-old during his break from college. Baldemar De La Pena Jr. and his son Baldemar De La Pena III were enjoying a day together during the 21-year-old's break from school. "We went to breakfast, then he was driving ahead of us," the father said. It was then that tragedy struck. Baldemar III was being followed by his parents, who were in another car, when he crashed into a utility pole. "I didn't want to move him," his father said. The Edinburg Economedes graduate died from his injuries with his family right there at the scene. They're all gathered again at the family's Edinburg home to remember the man who was pursuing a college education in Irving after having served his country in the Army for three years. This holiday season is now shattered by a loss no one could have prepared for. Initial reports from authorities indicate speed may have been involved and another cause was the wet roads at the time of the accident.
