Father gets $500,000 bond for baby found in canal

Enrique Medina in court

An Hidalgo County judge has issued a $500,000 bond to the father of the baby found dead in a canal on Monday.

Enrique Medina was charged with manslaughter for the death of his 2-month-old son.

Hidalgo County Sheriff TMs investigators said the baby, his mother, father and uncle were traveling in a car on Sunday when their vehicle rolled over along Seminary Road.

When authorities arrived at the scene, the baby was nowhere to be found.

The child TMs mother and Medina gave conflicting stories to authorities as to what happened during the crash and where their child went.

The uncle, driving the vehicle, died from injuries sustained in the rollover.

After 18 hours of searching, the baby TMs body was found 50 yards away from the crash site. Medina was taken into custody.

The 21-year-old father had walked along the edge of the canal with the baby in his arms.

Medina fell in, dropped the baby and failed to get him out.

The autopsy revealed the baby sustained no trauma in the accident, indicating drowning was the cause of death.

Medina cried in court as Judge Homero Jasso charged him.

He told the judge he wanted his baby, Judge Jasso told him he couldn TMt have the baby, because the infant was dead

Judge Jasso stated during Medina TMs arraignment that the father was in the U.S. illegally.

The judge advises no one should ever drink and drive, especially with a child in the car.

He said it is unfortunate that this all happened.
