Father loses toddler while "on drugs" at H-E-B

      A man is behind bars after he was allegedly on drugs during a trip to H-E-B with his 3-year-old son.

      The incident happened Saturday before 3 p.m. at the grocery store located on 1095 U.S. Highway 77.

      San Benito police arrested Richard Juarez after he was allegedly swaying back and forth.

      Police said that the 38-year-old couldn TMt keep his balance as he was pushing a cart with a 3-year-old child inside.

      Juarez reportedly told police that he lost his son inside HEB just before authorities arrived at the scene.

      According to the San Benito Police Department, the 38-year-old father admitted he took Alprazolam, a type of Xanax an hour before he made the trip to the store.

      Authorities arrested Juarez for public intoxication, endangering a child and possession of a controlled substance after police found three more pills inside his shirt pocket during the booking process.

      Judge David Garza arraigned the father and set a bond of $6,000.

      Child Protective Services contacted a family member to take custody of the toddler.
