Prosecutors say more than a dozen members of a drug ring that moved cocaine, heroin and other drugs from the Texas-Mexico border north to Houston and Dallas have made initial appearances in federal court.
The U.S. attorney's office said Monday that federal and local law enforcement agents arrested 16 people Friday in a sweep of the drug ring's operations in Laredo, Houston and Dallas.
Those arrested face charges that include drug distribution conspiracy, possession with intent to distribute and conspiracy to launder drug proceeds. They were ordered to remain in custody Monday.
The ring allegedly operated out of the Laredo area in South Texas and moved its proceeds across the border into Mexico.
The investigation, dubbed "Operation Ultimate D," was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration and Internal Revenue Service.
