Firefighters contain massive fire in rural Alton
Local firefighters worked to contain a massive fire in rural Alton that started at about 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Preliminary investigation suggests the fire could have started after someone tried to illegally burn tires.
Hidalgo County Fire Marshal Chief Deputy Eric Sanchez says the fire affected nearly eight acres of land.
An elderly couple that lives nearby managed to evacuate before they were affected by the smoke. Their home was not affected.
Firefighters from Sullivan City, Mercedes and the Hidalgo County Fire Marshal's office worked Wednesday to put out the blaze.
The fire remains under investigation.
