Five people trapped inside a car submerged in the waters of the Brownsville Shrimp Basin are confirmed dead.

Brownsville officials have not released the identity of the victims, but have confirmed two adults and three children died while being trapped inside a Mercury SUV.

A 14-year-old was rescued from the water and rushed to Valley Regional Medical Center.

It is not clear how the car ended up in the water at the Zimco Marine on the 1400 block of Everglade Road around 4 p.m. Thursday.

Firefighters were called to the scene. Port of Brownsville Police Chief Carlos Garcia said the car went into 21-feet of water.
