Following attempted home burglary, police arrest suspect and resident
Police arrested both a suspect and resident during an investigation into a home burglary in Mercedes.
On Oct. 12 at about 8:10 p.m., police were dispatched to the 800 block of Heidrick Ave. in reference to shots being fired.
Upon arrival, police detained three men who were seen running into the street and recovered a black handgun from the roadway.
Police later met with a homeowner who claimed “masked persons with guns” came onto her property.
The homeowner then stated her husband, identified as 32-year-old Esli De La Cruz, loaded his handgun and fired a warning shot to prevent the intruders from coming any further into the house, according to the criminal complaint.
De La Cruz reportedly chased the burglary suspects off the property and into the roadway.
During the course of an investigation, police identified 29-year-old Noe Tijerina of Mission as a suspect. He was later charged with burglary of habitation. A Justice of the Peace set bond at $100,000. He remains in the Hidalgo County jail and couldn’t be reached for comment.
Upon obtaining statements, police learned De La Cruz resided illegally in the United States. He was later charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon. De La Cruz was released from the Hidalgo County jail on Oct. 14 and couldn’t be reached for comment.
