Hidalgo Independent School District's former finance director is behind bars amid allegations that she stole $111,100 dollars in public funds.
Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Sylvia Yvonne Ruiz on a first-degree felony theft by a public servant charge on Thursday afternoon.
The 58-year-old woman is accused of pocketing $111,100 dollars in tuition funds collected by the school district.
Deputies said their investigation began back in July 2010.
Ruiz became a suspect because she was the only one who handle the funds and never produced the receipt book as requested.
Deputies believe the funds were stolen between August 2009 and January 2010.
Ruiz appeared before a judge at Hidalgo County Jail late Friday morning where she was issued a $250,000 bond.
Hidalgo ISD released the following statement in the case:
"The Hidalgo School District can not comment on any issues concerning Former Finance Director, Yvonne Ruiz, as it concerns personnel matters and the pending criminal investigation being conducted by the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department. We can confirm that the District requested the Sheriff's Department's assistance in an investigation concerning the Finance Department this summer."
