Fugitive and wife tracked down after five months

Juan Jose Cruz // Cameron County Jail

A man who was wanted on nine outstanding warrants is finally behind bars.

Juan Jose Cruz was wanted on outstanding warrants of manslaughter, human smuggling, engaging in organized criminal activity, unlawful possession of a firearm, and possession of marijuana.

The Gulf Coast Violent Offender and Fugitive Task Force in Brownsville arrested Cruz after he attempted to flee on foot, according to U.S. Marshals.

He was wanted for two counts of manslaughter after two people were killed when he allegedly fled in an SUV from authorities during a human smuggling chase.

Cruz had been on the run for a little over five months.

His wife, Isis Oropeza, was also arrested for her part in helping him escape and avoid arrest, the U.S. Marshals said.

Oropeza faces two counts of hindering apprehension.
