Funeral postponed for drowning victim until money is raised

Friends helping victim's family

A 19-year-old was celebrating his graduation from Donna High School at South Padre Island.

An accomplishment which was a dream come true, not just for Luis Hernandez, but his entire family.

His celebration was cut short Sunday at South Padre Island's Beach Access five.

"We were helping the girls because the current was very strong. He pushed one out and then he went under."

Hernandez's best friend Juan Torres, Jr. was right by his side until the waves separated them.

"We were looking everywhere and we couldn't see him," his best friend said.

Several minutes passed until Torres's worst fear was right there in the water. Hernandez was dead.

"I saw his tattoos on his back, his face was in the water," Torres said.

Torres has joined Hernandez's brothers and other members of their small Alamo neighborhood in raising money for his funeral. It has been put off a few days until the family can pay for it.

"We are having a car wash and selling chicken plates."

They all take turns washing the vehicles that come into the parking lot of Los Dos Veteranos drive thru and stand in the sizzling sun for hours on the corner of Tower and Minnesota asking for donations.

Their efforts are to help ease some of the large burden on a family mourning their son.
