Gamblers jailed after authorities raid Brownsville 8-liner

Rose Garden Inn // Brownsville

It's another blow to illegal gambling in Cameron County.

Authorities raided an eight liner casino at the Rose Garden Inn off Price Road and Expressway 83 in Brownsville.

The Cameron County District Attorney's Office is leading the raid. A number of law-enforcement officials are on hand.

More than a dozen people inside will be taken to the Cameron County Jail and booked under gambling charges.

Authorities had previously just issued tickets, but now there is a change of policy and gamblers will be arrested.

Cameron County District Attorney Luis Saenz said it was all part of the ongoing Operation Bishop.

Saenz said the hotel was providing electricity to the arcade while the neighboring Toucan Lounge was providing water.

His office plans to file a forfeiture lawsuit to seize the entire property.

"Again, I told owners of property that if you lease or rent your property know what's going on in there... in other words... if crimes are being committed, then your property will be subject to forfeiture and that's what we're doing here," Saenz said.

But customer Ramiro Hernandez Gonzalez told Action 4 News that he doesn't think the arrests were fair.

"It's something that get's people's mind off their problems and depression," Gonzalez said as he and the others were being led away in zip-tie cuffs.
