Texas Governor Rick Perry, Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst and Speaker Joe Strauss are directing DPS to immediately use state funding for more border protection.
Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has released a statement supporting more border protection from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Abbott says in his statement:
Texas is stepping up and doing what the federal government has failed to do " secure the porous border. The Obama Administration's failure to enforce the rule of law has empowered transnational gangs and cartels to smuggle people into our state from around the world -- including members of deadly gangs like MS-13. The Department of Public Safety will have the tools and resources it needs to curtail illegal smuggling, horrific human trafficking and cartel imported crime. Securing the border will reduce the illegal activity which " in turn " will promote the legitimate trade that helps make Texas the leading exporting state in the country.
The announcement came Wednesday, less than a week after Abbott requested the funds.
According to the Texas Attorney General office, Abbott sent a letter to Homeland Security Jeh Johnson wanting additional funds to stop the number if children crossing the border that has overwhelmed the U.S. Border Patrol..
The Texas Attorney General office said that agents are not securing the border and are not successful in stopping the criminal activity that is currently crossing the border.
