Grand jury clears 2 Brownsville policemen who shot and killed a knife-wielding man
Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz announced Thursday that a grand jury cleared two Brownsville police officers who killed a man accused of attacking them with a knife.
After reviewing the case, the grand jury returned a "no bill" — a determination that the evidence didn't support any criminal charges.
The officers shot and killed 31-year-old German Ornelas on Oct. 5, when they attempted to serve a felony warrant on West St. Charles Street.
According to a news release from the police department, Ornelas "brandished a knife" and attacked the officers.
Two officers — a 45-year-old man and a 50-year-old man — shot Ornelas. He died at the hospital.
Both officers returned to work after the shooting.
