Grenade found in glove box prompts San Juan neighborhood evacuation

The discovery of a grenade prompted authorities to evacuate a San Juan neighborhood around 3:00 p,m. Wednesday.

San Juan Police Sgt. Rolando Garcia told Action 4 News a routine traffic stop resulted in the discovery of a grenade in the glove box of a vehicle.

Garcia said about 40 homes were evacuated in the 2300 block of Fresno Street.

Two males were detained.

The McAllen Police Department Bomb Squad was called in to determine if the grenade was a dummy.

The incident is the third grenade-related incident in the San Juan/Pharr area since January.
