A group of Rio Grande Valley pastors made a gruesome discovery late Thursday morning.
The pastors were blessing a piece of land recently purchased by a church off Alaska Road in the Southmost area of Brownsville when they came across a woman's body.
Cameron County Sheriff's Department deputies were called to the scene just outside Brownsville city limits.
Chief Deputy Gus Reyna confirmed an investigation where deputies are trying to learn the woman's identity and how she died.
It's not clear how long the body had been there but was badly decomposed.
One of the pastors spoke to Action 4 News but did not want to named.
He said they were praying for the land and the neighborhood when they made the discovery.
The area is a known corridor for drug smuggling and illegal immigrants.
