Gunmen cross into Starr County fleeing soldiers in Mexico

Some eight gunmen reportedly crossed into the United States in Starr County following an armed clash with Mexican soldiers.

It all happened in a rural area of the county between Rio Grande City and Roma on Thursday afternoon.

Mexican army officials confirmed a gun battle between soldiers and armed civilians on the other side of the border between Camargo and Miguel Aleman.

Army officials did not have more information but investigators spoke with Action 4 News about the incident.

American investigators said eight armed suspects fled into the United States during the battle.

Several of the men returned to Mexico where they were reportedly arrested by Mexican soldiers.

Authorities reported finding automatic rifles and drugs on the American side of the border.

Investigators said a chase where an officer had to open fire occurred right after the incident.

It's not clear if any arrests have been made on the American side of the border.
