The newly-merged University of Texas Rio Grande Valley has taken another step forward.
During a Monday morning meeting, the UT Board of Regents named Guy Bailey as the school's first president.
Bailey, who was the former president of Texas Tech University and the University of Alabama, was among five men applying for the position.
UTPA President Robert Nelsen, Georgia Regents University President Ricardo Azziz and U.S. Army Secretary Louis Caldera were among the confirmed candidates.
Nelsen posted a message to his Twitter account about Bailey being selected as the school's first president.
"I did not get the UTRGV presidency," wrote on Twitter. "Guy Bailey will be the founding president. Let's give him our support."
UTRGV will welcome students for the school's inaugural classes in the fall 2015.
A medical school is expected to open in 2016.
