Harlingen EDC partly credits SpaceX for new hotels coming to city
Construction in the Harlingen area continues to ramp up, especially with hotel and lodging.
New accommodations in the form of three hotels are coming to the Harlingen area.
"One of the reasons-- and not the only reason--but, one of the reasons is really because they see a big demand coming because of SpaceX," said Harlingen Economic Development Corporation CEO Raudel Garza.
SpaceX is currently building a rocket launch pad at Boca Chica Beach. In preparation for the launches, several companies are sending crews to observe missions and satellites in orbit.
Garza says hotel developers see Harlingen as a fit, due to access to Valley International airport and the proximity to the launch site. Nearly 300 hotel rooms are expected to be built.
"It's about a 25 percent increase in the number of rooms that are actually in Harlingen," Garza said. "So, we should see about a 25 percent increase in hotel occupancy tax, as well."
Developers aren't given an incentive to build the hotels.
Garza says the market is so strong in Harlingen that developers have confidence in building their own hotels.
