A Harlingen gang member is behind bars after he allegedly fought with and tried to take a gun from a police officer who tried to arrest him.

Investigators told Action 4 News that 24-year-old Agustin Gutierrez Gonzales is behind bars on multiple criminal charges.

Police said Gonzales was allegedly one of two men caught breaking into a car off Shadowbrook Circle on the city's northside around 3:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Gonzales and the other suspect fled but a patrol officer was able to catch him.

The 24-year-old auto burglary suspect allegedly fought with the officer and tried to take his gun as well as punching the officer several times in the face.

The officer was able to handcuff Gonzales but investigators said the officer had to be taken to the Valley Baptist Medical Center for treatment for blurred vision, pain and minor injuries.

Gonzales appeared before a Harlingen municipal judge on Wednesday morning where he received $27,000 dollars in bonds.

Jail records show Gonzales was booked under two counts of burglary of a motor vehicle, evading arrest, resisting arrest, assault of a public servant and attempting to take a weapon from an officer.

The mugshot for Gonzales shows tattoos of the Vallucos and Tango Blast prison gangs.

Harlingen police told Action 4 News that Gonzales was a known street gang member who later became involved in prison gangs.
