The City of Harlingen is making last-minute preparations for their Fourth of July festivities.
Events will kick off on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the annual parade down Jackson Street.
Immediately after, organizers will host a Family Fiesta at nearby Gutierrez Park.
Organizer Cheryl LaBerge said there will live music, food, face painting, free watermelon, free Blue Bell ice cream and diversions such as the watermelon seed spitting contest.
LaBerge said patriotic residents often come dressed in red, white and blue.
"I think it's very important to celebrate your independence, she said. People all over the world admire the United States for their spirit and independence and I think it's great for people to recognize that it's something they need to preserve and protect it. "
The city will also host a fireworks display Saturday night-- around 9 p.m. at Harlingen Field.Click here to see other Fourth of July events in the Rio Grande Valley
