Harlingen residents troubled by floating body in canal

Harlingen police investigating the death of a man whose body was found in a canal near Matz and Third Street Saturday.

Meanwhile residents in the area say they still can't believe this happened in their very own backyard .

James Flores' heart nearly skipped a beat when he saw his home surrounded by firefighters and police Saturday evening.

"I thought maybe someone crashed into my house, my home was on fire, " said James Flores.

Flores lives right next to the canal. Just minutes before he got home Saturday evening, some people passing by discovered a body floating in it.

"That terrified me even more cause what happened to this guy? I'm still kind of in shock about it," said Flores.

Police are not releasing the name of the middle-aged man whose body was pulled from the canal, but they said witnesses told investigators, the body was partially submerged when they spotted it.

"I exercise through here, but what are the chances of you finding a dead body next to the troubles me, said Flores. Harlingen police have not revealed how the man died - an autopsy has been ordered.Click here to follow Ashly Custer on Twitter
