Harlingen traffic stop yields $85,000 dollars in cash

A Harlingen man is under investigation after authorities allegedly found $85,000 dollars in cash hidden in a secret compartment in his car.

Harlingen police arrested 22-year-old Eleazar Castillo Fuentes during an early morning traffic stop.

Investigators told Action 4 News that first spotted his red jeep headed east on Expressway 83 near Bass Boulevard.

The officer pulled Fuentes over at the frontage road of the expressway and New Hampshire Street for speeding and failing to stay in his lane.

During a search of the car, the officer allegedly found a secret compartment in the undercarriage of his SUV.

A K-9 officer arrived at the scene and alerted officers to something suspicious.

Authorities took the car to the police department where investigators were unable to unlock the compartment and found several bundles wrapped in black tape inside.

Investigators found $85,000 dollars in cash inside the bundles, which where all turned over to U.S. Homeland Security Investigations agents for investigation.

Fuentes appeared before a Harlingen municipal judge on Tuesday morning where he was issued $280 dollars in fines for the traffic violations.
