Hidalgo County DA throws out several dozen cases following Panama Unit scandal

District Attorney Rene Guerra

The Hidalgo County District Attorney TMs office has thrown out about 50 to 75 cases investigated by the Panama Unit. Rene Guerra told Action 4 News that once an officer TMs integrity comes into question, he cannot proceed with prosecution.

"There is no way that you can put an officer on the stand and expect a jury to believe him, Guerra said.

If you show them to be corrupt or a liar, anything that he does will be called into question."

Guerra said these cases date back to about a year and a half ago.

He said once the indictments against the Panama Unit came down, he immediately started to check into their cases.

Jonathan Trevino, Salvador Joel Arguello, Claudio Alberto Mata and Eric Michael Alcantar all pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute.

Gerardo Mendoza-Duran pleaded guilty to attempting to aid and abet the possession with intent to distribute.
