Hidalgo County Elections Department ready for November
Hidalgo County is seeing an increase in registered voters this election, but the staff in one area of the elections department has decreased.
So far this year, 331,000 residents are registered to vote in Hidalgo County. That’s 23,814 more people than the last presidential election.
Employees of the Hidalgo County Elections Department known as “voter registration specialists” are tasked with registering those voters. They send information to the state, verify addresses, and assign each voter to his or her designated precinct.
“The voter registration department to me is the heart of elections,” said Hidalgo County Elections Administrator Yvonne Ramon.
In the past, Hidalgo County had twelve voter registration specialists. That number has dwindled to five. Ramon said the decrease has not affected the efficiency of the department largely because improved technology has decreased the need for manpower.
“I spoke to larger counties and inquired as to why they’re successful in being able to do the job that I was asked to do but with less employees and what it came down to were software, programs, things that our department did not have,” said Ramon.
Ramon said her voter registration specialists are prepared to handle increased turnout at the polls in November.
