A Hidalgo County man is listed as one of two men who escaped from a state prison located about halfway between Laredo and San Antonio.
Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) officials reported the escapes of Octavio Ramos Lopez and Jose Fernando Bustos-Diaz around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The two men allegedly cut a hole in the fence at the TDCJ's Dolph Briscoe Unit of Highway 85 outside Dilley.
The south Texas town is located 75 miles southwest of San Antonio and 85 miles away from the Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas.
Prison records show that Lopez was convicted in two aggravated kidnapping cases and two possession of a controlled substance cases from Hidalgo County.
Details about those cases were not immediately available but Lopez's criminal history shows arrests in McAllen and San Juan.
Prison records show Lopez was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the aggravated kidnapping cases and 12 years for the drug cases back in February 2007.
Prior to his escape, Lopez was scheduled to be released from prison in November 2026.
Prison records show that Bustos-Diaz is serving a 35-year sentence for a Harris County murder case.
The San Antonio Express-News reported that both men are Mexican nationals.
