Hidalgo County precinct four has a new constable.
The Hidalgo County commissioner TMs court unanimously appointed Atanacio "J.R." Gaitan as interim precinct four constable.
The position was left vacant when the court appointed Eddie Guerra as interim sheriff last week.
Gaitan has served in the Hidalgo County court system for more than two decades, his latest position was bailiff in the 139th court under Judge Bobby Flores.
I've been working over at the county courthouse for about 23 years, working for professional judges in the judicial system, and I thought I was ready to take office on the precinct court trying to assist the justice courts, Gaitan said.
Precinct four commissioner Joseph Palacios acknowledged all four applicants were qualified for the position.
The other three applicants were Eddie Guerra as interim sheriff, Raul Ramos and Horaldo Sanchez.
Sgt. Aaron Luis Moreno of the precinct four constable's office told Action 4 News he too is happy with the court's decision.
"We are pleased with the selection the commissioners made today. There are big shoes for him to fill but he has a great support staff. We just want to continue going forward with this office, Moreno said.
While it is an interim position, Gaitan said he would like to run for office in November.
The Hidalgo County Democratic precinct 4 chair representatives will decide this summer if Gaitan will become their party's nominee.
Whoever is elected to constable in November will serve the remaining two years of the four year term.
