Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office roundup deadbeat parents

The Texas Attorney General's Office and the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office have teamed up to crack down on dead-beat parents.

The sheriff's office has a list of 64 parents across the county who are not paying child support, some of whom they began processing Tuesday morning.

"This will not be tolerated, Sheriff Lupe Trevino said. If a judge mandates that you pay your monthly child support and if you don't, you are liable to get arrested."

The attorney general's office compiled the list of offenders over the past month.

These parents are allegedly thousands of dollars behind in their payments.

One even owes more than $100,000.

"This is very important for us because in my opinion not paying child support is a form of non physical child abuse because those children do need that financial help, Trevino said.

The round up doesn't come without a cost.

The Sheriff's Office has dedicated 33 of their deputies to the operation and jail room as well.

But Trevino says it is worth it if it helps the county's children.

"You have to give some to take some, Trevino said. But this needs to be done. It TMs necessary."

This is the first round up of its kind in the county, but Trevino says they will do it again if necessary.

"We do everything that we can to improve their quality of life and if arresting their dead-beat parents is doing so it TMs what we are going to do."The sheriff's office plans to make all the arrests by the end of the week.
