Authorities have shut down several beaches in Cameron County following a cold front that created strong rip currents and extremely high tides.
Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos has ordered the closure of only County Beach Accesses No. 5 and No. 6 on the northern end of South Padre Island as well as Boca Chica Beach.
Cascos said the three other beaches were shut down due to strong rip currents and extremely high tides.
The beaches will be reopened as soon as weather and tide conditions permit.
Due to this risk, we are asking residents to refrain from entering these three beach accesses, Cascos said in a statement. In addition, I have asked our law enforcement authorities to ensure that no individuals or vehicles be allowed entry to these three beaches. It is very important that the public pay attention to our warnings and stay out of harm TMs way.
Both Andy Bowie Park and Isla Blanca Park on South Padre Island remain open.
