Authorities have been called to a canal northeast of Rio Hondo where a horse was trapped in chest-high water.
It all happened in a rural area off Nelson Road shortly after 12 p.m. Monday.
It's not clear how the horse became trapped in the water but it's trapped in chest-high water and unable to get up the concrete canal banks.
Neighbors told Action 4 News that they notified the Cameron County Sheriff's Department, who is sending a rescue crew.
Area resident Hedley Hichens sent a photo to Action 4 News.
Hichens said it's common for area landowners to tie up their horses along the canal.
Rescuers used a rope to pull the horse out of the canal and tie it up so it wouldn't get trapped again.
