Houston woman arrested for child smuggling in Brownsville

A Houston woman is behind bars in the Rio Grande Valley after she allegedly tried to smuggle a 3-year-old girl into the United States.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested 29-year-old Roberta Ausencio on human smuggling charges on Tuesday.

Ausencio drove up from Matamoros at Brownsville TMs Veterans International Bridge with a young girl.

The Houston woman told customs officers that the girl was her daughter and showed them a birth certificate of a 3-year-old girl.

Customs officers learned that the young girl was actually an illegal immigrant from Mexico.

Court records show that Ausencio confessed that she was supposed to get paid $1,500 dollars to smuggle the girl.

Ausencio appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald Morgan in Brownsville on Wednesday morning.

Records show that Ausencio is a United States citizen who lives in Houston.

Judge Morgan denied bond for Ausencio until a Friday morning hearing.
