A smuggler is behind bars after he assaulted a game warden near the Rio Grande.
It happened Tuesday at about 7:30 p.m. just south of McAllen.
Texas Parks & Wildlife Maj. Malcolm Wilkes spoke to Action 4 News about the case.
Maj. Wilkes said the warden was patrolling the riverfront in a pickup truck when he spotted a group of unauthorized immigrants that had just crossed the river.
The game warden tried to stop them, when smuggling suspect Natanael Againo resisted arrest and began hitting the warden as he tried to make his way back to Mexico.
Maj. Wilkes said the game warden was able to arrest Againo, who was later transported to the Hidalgo County Jail.
Authorities charged Again with smuggling of persons, evading arrest and resisting arrest.
The game warden was not seriously injured and is back on patrol today.
