An immigrant from Guatemala is behind bars on a weapons offense after being accused of having a 40 caliber hi-point handgun.
Oscar Romeo Martin-Zacarias was caught at a Brownsville home on July 15, 2014.
Homeland Security Investigations special agents and US Border Patrol searched the Brownville residence.
That TMs when agents found four unauthorized immigrants inside the house during the consensual search, according to a criminal complaint. Martin allegedly told agents he had the weapon inside a safe.
He cooperated by providing the agents with the combination to the safe where they found the handgun with the obliterated serial number.
The Guatemalan immigrant told agents he had previously been deported, and he knew he was not allowed to be in possession of the firearm, according to court documents.
Martin was booked into the Cameron County Jail on the weapons charge.
