Ingrid strengthens to hurricane status in Gulf of Mexico

The National Hurricane Center upgraded Tropical Storm Ingrid to hurricane status Saturday at 3:45 pm.

Ingrid is only the second storm to reach hurricane status so far in the 2013 season.

Ingrid currently has sustained wind speedsof more than 75 mph and is moving to the north at about 6 mph.

The storm is expected to make a shape left turn and track westward before making landfall near Tampico, Mexico early Monday morning.

Heavy rains are still expected for the Rio Grande Valley through early next week with some portions of the valley seeing as much as five inches of rain through Monday.

A Coastal Flood Warning and High Surf Warning are in effect for Kenedy, Willacy and Cameron counties and will continue until 7 pm Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

High swells and some flooding of beaches are possible.
