Intoxication assault charges in Harlingen concrete barrier crash

A Mercedes man is behind bars after being accused of intoxicated while crashing his car into a concrete barrier.

Harlingen police filed an intoxication assault charge against 22-year-old Fernando Leija Garcia.

Investigators told Action 4 News that Garcia was behind the wheel of a blue Mazda Protg that crashed into a concrete barrier.

It all happened on the westbound lanes of Expressway 83 near Bass Boulevard around 9:15 a.m. Christmas Day.

Firefighters had to extract both Garcia and his male passenger from the car.

Police said Garcia TMs 19-year-old passenger remains in the hospital in stable condition.

Officers learned Garcia was intoxicated at the time of the accident and arrested him after he was released from the hospital.

Garcia appeared before a Harlingen Municipal Court judge on Wednesday morning where he was issued a $10,000 dollar bond.
