Jury gives Alamo man 37 years for murder
A Hidalgo County jury has given an Alamo man 37 years for the December 2011 murder of a San Juan man.
Jurors stayed late on Tuesday evening to sentence Roel Lopez to prison.
The jury gave Lopez 37 years in prison for the murder of 37-year-old Efren Escamilla.
Lopez was originally charged with capital murder, which meant he would have been eligible for the death penalty.
But jurors found him guilty of murder.
Members of Escamilla's family testifed against Lopez during sentencing phase of the trial.
Lopez is eligible for parole in 14 years.
