A San Benito man is headed to prison for the next 50 years for the brutal stabbing death of a 19-year-old college student.
Jurors heard testimony for the sentencing of Robert John Martinez in the 103rd State District Court on Tuesday morning.
After hearing testimony, jurors decided to sentence Martinez to 50 years in prison for murder.
It took jurors less than an hour to return with a guilty verdict on Monday.
Martinez is just one of six people arrested in the stabbing death of 19-year-old Texas State Technical College student Angel Perez.
San Benito investigators said Martinez and five other men attacked Perez in November.
Perez was reportedly with two men who Martinez and other believed were burglarizing cars in their neighborhood.
The suspects claimed police were charging the wrong people.
Family members said Perez had battled Hodgkin's Lymphoma for 18 months and was in remission for about two months before he died.
