Hundreds of fans hoping to catch a glimpse of pop stars Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez prompted managers to shut down the Rio Grande Valley's busiest shopping mall.

False rumors about the on-again-off-again couple being at La Plaza Mall in McAllen drew hundreds of fans.

La Plaza Mall officials issued a tweet saying the rumors were false but mall manager Irma Castor said fans did not believe it.

Castor told Action 4 News that the number of people at the mall created a public safety concern prompting managers to shut it down.

The mall shutdown comes hours after Bieber and Gomez ate at Don Pepe's Restaurant off South McColl Road in McAllen.

Fans snapped photos of the couple shopping at a perfurme store off South Main Street.

Bieber's surprise visit to see Gomez comes one day after he gave a deposition for a lawsuit in Miami.

Gomez is holding a concert as part of BorderFest at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo but it's not clear if Bieber will attend.

Neither attorneys nor managers for the two have issued a comment.

Bieber is normally active on social media but has not posted anything on-line since Wednesday but did

Gomez posted a photo to Instagram, Twitter and Facebook confirming that she is in the Rio Grande Valley but did not mention Bieber.
