La Feria High School volunteer killed in accident near Corpus Christi

Authorities are investigating a fatal auto accident near Corpus Christi that has claimed the life of a La Feria volunteer.

It all happened on Highway 77 at FM 2826 just south of Robstown late Wednesday afternoon.

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) state troopers are investigating the fatal accident.

State troopers said an 18-wheeler pulled onto Highway 77 when an SUV, driven by high school volunteer Jerry Steinbach, crashed into the semi-truck.

Three male La Feria High School students were inside the SUV driven by Steinbach.

State troopers said Steinbach was killed in the accident while the three students were all hospitalized at the Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi.

Action 4 News confirmed that one of the students had to be airlifted to the hospital while the other two were taken by ambulance. They all face non-life threatening injuries.

Steinbach's wife, a high school teacher, was in another vehicle with three other students but managed to swerve and avoid the 18-wheeler.

La Feria High School and school district officials traveled to Corpus Christi.

DPS is considering Criminal Negligent Homicide charges for driver of the 18-wheeler that caused the crash.
