Thousands of Rio Grande Valley residents are off to a good start of their New Year's Eve resolutions. They all participated in the 25th annual Longest Causeway Run and Fitness Walk. The event is sponsored by the Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce each year. The 6.2-mile race includes running on the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway as part of the course.

Action 4 News Sunrise anchors Lacie Lowry and Romeo Cantu participated in the fitness walk as did the show's producer Meredith Benson.

KGBT's Interactive Manager Sergio Chapa and Action 4 News Sunrise director Mauro Escamilla and participated in the 10K race, which drew more than 1,000 runners.

Romeo and Lacie said they would like to run the race next year.

The race drew participants from across Texas, the United States and northern Mexico but also a lot of familiar faces from the Rio Grande Valley.

Charlie Abrego from the Gladys Porter Zoo appears weekly on Action 4 News at noon.

Abrego said it was his first race and was pleased he finished in less than one hour.
