Pilots landing at the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport have recently been phased with an unexpected obstacle.
Authorities said a laser beam is being flashed into airplanes' cockpits as they TMre landing passenger flights.
Brownsville police are working with the FBI to determine where this high-powered laser is coming from and who is responsible for it.
Police said the laser flashing has been ongoing for several months and although there hasn't been a specific pattern, it's become a safety concern since it's putting hundreds of lives in danger.
"It's a very dangerous thing to do because obviously it could be a hazard or a disaster, said Brownsville Police Investigator J.J. Trevio. This one has to be some sort of high powered one. Exactly what it is we don TMt have that information yet, but it has to be high powered to where it will reach that distance"
Police believe the laser is coming from the neighborhoods in the surrounding area possibly from Minnesota Road or California Road.
Authorities said pointing a laser at an airplane is a federal offense, and should it cause an accident, the person or persons responsible could be charged with numerous crimes.
Anyone with information on this is asked to contact Brownsville Crime Stoppers at 546-TIPS.
