Cameron County decided not to appoint legal counsel for Justice of the Peace Erin Garcia amid a marriage license controversy.
The commissioners court held an executive session this morning to discuss the issue after a lawsuit was filed earlier this month against the justice of the peace.
The lawsuit alleges Garcia was waiving the required 72 hour waiting period.
It was dismissed Wednesday by the couple who filed the suit.
The Cameron County DA's office is now seeking the Attorney General's help in interpreting the law.
"There's a lot of ambiguity in a lot of legislation so I don't blame the DA. I think it's a good idea that he asked for an opinion because there is somewhat of a doubt-one can read it one way, one can read it another way," said Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos.
Cascos said the lawsuit could be brought back in the future at that point the Commissioners court will revisit the possibility of appointing counsel for Judge Garcia.
