A man is behind bars after being accused of attempting to smuggle cocaine into the U.S. so the load could be dropped off at Sunrise Mall in Brownsville.
Edgar Jesus Santibanez-Cantu was arrested at Gateway International Port of Entry in Brownsville after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers found 14.77 pounds of cocaine in his car.
The incident happened on Sunday, June 29th in the vehicular lanes of the port of entry.
According to a criminal complaint, Santibanez-Cantu was driving an 2004 Acura MDX with Mexican license plates.
He was referred to secondary inspection when authorities then found six bundles of drugs inside the car, according to documents.
He allegedly told authorities he thought he was smuggling money, not drugs.
A criminal compalaint said he was going to be paid $1,200 to smuggle the drugs.
Santibanez-Cantu was booked into the Cameron County jail on the drug charge.
